Night in a tent in a bivouac.
Day 9:2nd stage - Cave 1 (2700m) - Kikelewa Cave (3600m)

Return to Kibo Hut for a hot meal. Crossing the great plain (the “saddle”) to reach the Horombot Hut bivouac (3720m), located among giant ragworts and lobelia. This day is the most demanding, about 13 hours of walking in total.

Kilimanjaro is a volcanic mountain located in Tanzania. It is formed by three volcanoes that are now extinct: Shira (3962 meters above sea level), Mawenzi (5149 meters) and Kibo, whose Uhuru peak culminates at 5891 meters. It is the highest peak in Africa. Kilimanjaro is also known for its ice sheet, although it is in the process of disappearing due to global warming. The ascent can be done from seven different starting points, via very busy hiking trails. It takes between 6 and 10 days to reach the summit.

Important information
Level/Intensity ****
This tour takes place mainly on the Tanzanian highlands and in the plains at the foot of Kilimanjaro.
This tour takes place mainly on the Tanzanian highlands and in the plains at the foot of Kilimanjaro.
During the safari in the parks and reserves, no carrying of personal belongings, thanks to the all-terrain vehicle, luggage is collected every evening at the bivouac. We drive about 500km of roads and trails in the reserves.
During the ascent, the itinerary varies from 1550m to 5895m and the altitude differences are therefore marked (about 1000m per day), stages of 4 to 6 hours per day on average until the last bivouac, allowing a healthy person to be in shape for the summit day, long (13h) and challenging due to the altitude (5895m) and the stiffness of the last part (snowfields without danger).
However, there are no technical difficulties; adaptation to altitude is facilitated if one adopts a slow and regular pace from the first day of the ascent.
During the ascent, the luggage is brought to the bivouacs by porters; it is possible to store most of your travel effects at the hotel in Marangu.
Electricity
The current used is 230 Volts, sockets identical to those used in the United Kingdom (sockets with 3 plugs, 2 horizontal and 1 vertical), adapter required. Frequent power cuts.
Park entrance regulations
The price of park tickets is included in the price of the trip. You will not have to pay for these entries on site.
Plastic bags
Attention: Since June 1, 2019, it is strictly forbidden to import any plastic bag whatsoever. It is advisable to check your hand luggage before disembarking. Any plastic bag or bag must be left on the plane before disembarking, under penalty of substantial fines.

Health and formalities
Mandatory vaccination: Tanzanian authorities can be very strict about vaccination against yellow fever. Vaccination against yellow fever is in principle only required for people coming from a country where this fever is endemic (1), or for people who have transited more than 12 hours through one of these countries.
In practice, this regulation is sometimes followed variously and proof of vaccination is required indistinctly. In order to avoid any inconvenience, it is highly recommended to be up to date for the vaccination against yellow fever and to be in possession of an international vaccination record.
Careful! For the two programs taking place on the island of Zanzibar (Multisports in Zanzibar and From Selous Park to the Island of Zanzibar), the yellow fever vaccine is MANDATORY and the vaccination record is required on site. Otherwise, you must be vaccinated upon arrival.
Highly recommended vaccinations: DTP, hepatitis A and B, DT Polio, typhoid fever, meningitis A and C. Check that your reminders are up to date.
Malaria: It is strongly recommended to take anti-malarial treatment (consult your doctor or the Pasteur Institute one month before your departure). Classification: zone 3.
Dengue: it has been present in Tanzania for some years. This disease is transmitted by a simple mosquito bite. The symptoms of the disease are similar to those of the flu (high fever, joint pain, headache). Since dengue can take a dangerous form, it is strongly recommended to consult a doctor in case of fever (taking aspirin is strictly not recommended). It is therefore advisable to systematically protect yourself from mosquitoes, day and night (long clothing, anti-mosquito products to be used on the skin and on clothing, electric diffusers, mosquito nets), especially in Dar-Es-Salaam and its surroundings, as well as in the archipelago of Zanzibar..
Chikungunya can be transmitted. There is currently no preventive treatment for these diseases. Individual prevention is therefore essentially based on the means of protection against mosquito bites. In case of fever, medical advice should be taken promptly.
Water: You have to be careful with water. Never drink tap water, or water in the middle of nature. Drink boiled water, or water treated with Micropur Forte or Aquatabs, or drinks purchased in closed bottles. We recommend mineral water. A few basic hygiene rules will save you a lot of inconvenience: always wash your hands with soap before eating.
Sun: You are under the equator. Do not forget to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Keep a T-shirt, or a long sleeve sweatshirt.
Personal pharmacy recommended:
Your current medications
Pain medication (paracetamol type)
Antispasmodic (Spasfon type)
Antiseptic (Betadine type)
Anti-inflammatory
Antimalarial
Arnica in capsules or in stick
Bands, plasters and elastoplastic
Water purifying tablets (micropur type) according to your destination
Antiseptic eye drops
Anti-diarrheal
Tire tick
Sterile pads
Tweezers, scissors, safety pins
There is no current antibiotic in the UCPA pharmacy, each participant must bring, if they wish, their own treatment according to their tolerance.
Important!
No additional travel insurance is included in your registration. We remind you that it is essential that you have at least a “medical care abroad” guarantee and a “repatriation” guarantee including “search and rescue costs”.
We advise you to consult the General Insurance Conditions pages on our website: https://www.ucpa.com/assurances
Whatever your insurance, do not forget to take the necessary information with you during your trip abroad: name and contact details (telephone, email) of your assistance company and the number of the contract taken out. This information will be requested upon arrival by our local correspondent.

Weather
Weather forecast for the program “Kilimanjaro Reserves”:
Beyond all the cliches, the highlands of Tanzania are “cold places where the sun is hot”.
Beyond all the cliches, the highlands of Tanzania are “cold places where the sun is hot”.
Altitude is a determining factor in temperature. This trip takes place in regions whose altitude ranges from 1300 to 5800 m and it is obvious that the temperatures will be very different for the same time of the year from one place to another. An extreme temperature range is another characteristic of the climate on Kilimanjaro. Because if the nights are cold (frost possible), the arrival of the sun in the early morning immediately brings a rapid rise in temperatures... Rainfall is always to be feared throughout the year, especially at Kilimanjaro, so be sure to bring a rain cape. There are two rainy seasons (November, December) and (March, April, May). The most favorable times to climb Kilimanjaro are during the dry seasons in January and February, or from June to October. Average temperatures in °C (Minima/Maxima): Arusha (altitude 1400 meters): Oct. 11/20 Nov. 12/19 Dec. 13/18 Jan. 11/15 Mar. 12/16 Apr. 13/18 May 13/16 June 13/18 May 13/16 June 10/13 June 10/13 July 10/13 July 10/13 Jul 10/15 July 10/15 August 11/20 August 11/20 Sept. 10/18 At the summit of Kilimanjaro, count about 25°C lower than in Arusha (it can be -15°C). Weather
Weather forecast for the program “Kilimanjaro Reserves”:
Beyond all the cliches, the highlands of Tanzania are “cold places where the sun is hot”.
