Valley of Wonders
The Mercantour valley with rock carvings
In the Southern Alps, at the foot of Mount Bégo, which culminates at 2,873 m in the Mercantour National Park, lies a human treasure: the “Valley of Wonders”. This exceptional place, classified as a historical monument, offers deserving hikers, after several hours of walking, no less than 36,000 prehistoric rock carvings. Dating from 4000 to 5000 years old, dating from the Bronze Age, they represent cattle heads, teams, weapons and some emblematic figures such as “Christ” or “the Wizard”.
