Early departure by vehicle for Morogoro, 200km west of Dar Es Salam (about 6 hours drive). The asphalt road becomes a track that is sometimes in poor condition, crisscrossing the mountain.
A change of scenery is guaranteed! Night in a very simple camp near a village.
Day 4: Day of hiking and observation
Day alternating hiking and traveling in a 4x4 vehicle: we will thus start with a 3-hour walk in the morning. Then we take a long track, the real main artery of the region. Crossing a protected forest will be a unique opportunity for us to observe different species of monkeys. Succession of encounters in landscapes with particularly luxuriant vegetation. Night in a bivouac. Approximately 3 hours of walking.
Day 5: Arrival at Selous Park
The last villages pass before we enter Selous Park through the north gate. Created in 1922, this 55,000 km² reserve is the largest in Africa (larger than Switzerland). This eccentric reserve in south-east Tanzania has remained outside the usual tourist flows, which also explains the richness of its wildlife. Buffaloes, lions, zebras, zebras, giraffes, giraffes, gazelles, gazelles, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, cheetahs, leopards, and even a few rare black rhinos are frequently encountered there. The other particularity of Selous is that it is possible to do walking tours accompanied by a park ranger! This opportunity offers the possibility of even closer contact with the nature that surrounds us.
4x4 safari to reach our camp, located on the edge of Lake Tagalala.
Day 6: Selous Park Safari Day
Early morning observation walk (approx. 2 hours, accompanied by a park ranger) to meet these prestigious animals. 4x4 safari in the afternoon (approx. 2 hours). Bathing in hot springs. Return to the camp on foot, accompanied by our ranger (approx. 2 hours). Overnight at Tagalala camp.
Day 7: Second day of safari in Selous Park
Long safari on the occasion of the vehicle crossing the park in a vehicle heading east. Installation at the campsite at the entrance of the park, east gate, on the banks of the Rufiji River. At this level, the river has the appearance of a large African river and its swampy meanders are home to a particularly diverse fauna.
Day 8: Dar Es Salaam
250 km of track and asphalt road to reach Dar Es Salam (about 5h30 drive). Dinner and night in a hotel, located in town, near the port.
Day 9: Zanzibar
Morning transfer on foot to the port and boarding the boat for Zanzibar (2 hours of crossing). French-speaking welcome upon arrival in the city of Zanzibar and check-in at the hotel. Free afternoon to discover this charming city, its winding streets and its varied population. Free meals.
Day 10: Prison Island - Jozani Forest
We take a boat to reach Changuu Island (or “Prison Island”), a very small island near Zanzibar (15min crossing). This place is home to a park with giant tortoises, sometimes centuries old. Swimming possible, lunch on site. Return to Zanzibar in the early afternoon and transfer to the East Coast (Jambiani or Bwéju beach, 1h30 drive). We make a stop in the Jozani forest which contains a unique fauna and flora. You can observe red colobus, monkeys endemic to Zanzibar. Walk in the humid forest and foray into a mangrove. Free dinner, night in a bungalow, by the sea.
Day 11: Free day
Discover or relax on the island of Zanzibar. Free meals, night in a bungalow.
Day 12: North of Zanzibar
Early departure to the north of the island (approx. 2 hours). The best way to discover this part of the island is certainly the “Spice Tour”: a walk to make you feel, touch and taste the innumerable vegetable wonders that have made the island rich (about 2 hours). Fragrant local lunch. During the day, visit various remains of the Arabian period: Sultan's palace, Persian baths (30min, approximately). Free dinner, night in a B&B bungalow on Nungwy beach.
Day 13: Free day in the Nungwi region
Free day in the north of Zanzibar. The Nungwy region is renowned for its beaches, the most beautiful in Zanzibar, and for the construction of “dows”, traditional dhows from the Indian Ocean. Possibility to do scuba diving (first dive possible, option to be paid on site). Free lunch and dinner. Night in a bungalow, at the same accommodation as the day before.

Accessible to everyone. This trip allows you to discover two different regions:
- Selous Park (hiking and safari),
- the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania (minibuses, walks, free days).
The observation walks in Selous Park are observation walks, without technical difficulty. Only the heat may seem exhausting for some.
Displacement
During the safari: in a 4x4 vehicle with an opening roof, equipped for this type of trip. The luggage takes place on the roof. Be careful, we drive on tracks that are sometimes in very poor condition, especially after the rainy season, which can cause mechanical problems and punctures. Thank you for keeping in a good mood.
On the island of Zanzibar: minibuses.
Electricity
230 Volts, sockets identical to those used in the United Kingdom (sockets with 3 plugs - 2 flat horizontal and 1 vertical), adapter required. Frequent power cuts.
Plastic bags
Careful! Since June 1, 2019, it has been strictly forbidden to import any plastic bag. It is advisable to check your hand luggage before disembarking. Any plastic bag or bag must be left on the plane before disembarking, under penalty of substantial fines.

Health and formalities
Mandatory vaccination: Tanzanian authorities can be very strict about vaccination against yellow fever. Vaccination against yellow fever is in principle only required for people coming from a country where this fever is endemic (1), or for people who have transited more than 12 hours through one of these countries.
In practice, this regulation is sometimes followed variously and proof of vaccination is required indistinctly. In order to avoid any inconvenience, it is highly recommended to be up to date for the vaccination against yellow fever and to be in possession of an international vaccination record.
Careful! For the two programs taking place on the island of Zanzibar (Multisports in Zanzibar and From Selous Park to the Island of Zanzibar), the yellow fever vaccine is MANDATORY and the vaccination record is required on site. Otherwise, you must be vaccinated upon arrival.
Highly recommended vaccinations: DTP, hepatitis A and B, DT Polio, typhoid fever, meningitis A and C. Check that your reminders are up to date.
Malaria: It is strongly recommended to take anti-malarial treatment (consult your doctor or the Pasteur Institute one month before your departure). Classification: zone 3.
Dengue: it has been present in Tanzania for some years. This disease is transmitted by a simple mosquito bite. The symptoms of the disease are similar to those of the flu (high fever, joint pain, headache). Since dengue can take a dangerous form, it is strongly recommended to consult a doctor in case of fever (taking aspirin is strictly not recommended). It is therefore advisable to systematically protect yourself from mosquitoes, day and night (long clothing, anti-mosquito products to be used on the skin and on clothing, electric diffusers, mosquito nets), especially in Dar-Es-Salaam and its surroundings, as well as in the archipelago of Zanzibar..
Chikungunya can be transmitted. There is currently no preventive treatment for these diseases. Individual prevention is therefore essentially based on the means of protection against mosquito bites. In case of fever, medical advice should be taken promptly.
Water: You have to be careful with water. Never drink tap water, or water in the middle of nature. Drink boiled water, or water treated with Micropur Forte or Aquatabs, or drinks purchased in closed bottles. We recommend mineral water. A few basic hygiene rules will save you a lot of inconvenience: always wash your hands with soap before eating.
Sun: You are under the equator. Do not forget to protect your skin from the sun's rays. Keep a T-shirt, or a long sleeve sweatshirt.
Personal pharmacy recommended:
Your current medications
Pain medication (paracetamol type)
Antispasmodic (Spasfon type)
Antiseptic (Betadine type)
Anti-inflammatory
Antimalarial
Arnica in capsules or in stick
Bands, plasters and elastoplastic
Water purifying tablets (micropur type) according to your destination
Antiseptic eye drops
Anti-diarrheal
Tire tick
Sterile pads
Tweezers, scissors, safety pins
There is no current antibiotic in the UCPA pharmacy, each participant must bring, if they wish, their own treatment according to their tolerance.
Important!
No additional travel insurance is included in your registration. We remind you that it is essential that you have at least a “medical care abroad” guarantee and a “repatriation” guarantee including “search and rescue costs”.
We advise you to consult the General Insurance Conditions pages on our website: https://www.ucpa.com/assurances
Whatever your insurance, do not forget to take the necessary information with you during your trip abroad: name and contact details (telephone, email) of your assistance company and the number of the contract taken out. This information will be requested upon arrival by our local correspondent.

Beyond all the cliches, the highlands of Tanzania are “cold places where the sun is hot”.
Altitude is a determining factor in temperature. This trip takes place in regions whose altitude ranges from 1300 to 5800 m and it is obvious that the temperatures will be very different for the same time of the year from one place to another. An extreme temperature range is another characteristic of the climate on Kilimanjaro. Because if the nights are cold (frost possible), the arrival of the sun in the early morning immediately brings a rapid rise in temperatures... Rainfall is always to be feared throughout the year, especially at Kilimanjaro, so be sure to bring a rain cape. There are two rainy seasons (November, December) and (March, April, May). The most favorable times to climb Kilimanjaro are during the dry seasons in January and February, or from June to October. Average temperatures in °C (Minima/Maxima): Arusha (altitude 1400 meters): Oct. 11/20 Nov. 12/19 Dec. 13/18 Jan. 11/15 Mar. 12/16 Apr. 13/18 May 13/16 June 13/18 May 13/16 June 10/13 June 10/13 July 10/13 July 10/13 Jul 10/15 July 10/15 August 11/20 August 11/20 Sept. 10/18 At the summit of Kilimanjaro, count about 25°C lower than in Arusha (it can be -15°C). Plan your equipment accordingly.
For the program “From Selous Park to the Island of Zanzibar”: The trip takes place near the equator, between 5° and 10° south latitude. Two rainy seasons predominate, the most important of which extends from approximately March to May, followed by a dry season that lasts until October. The year ends with light rains in November and December. In January and February there is a short dry season. High humidity on the island of Zanzibar. The best times to travel to Tanzania are of course the dry periods, between June and October, or in January and February. Average temperatures (maximum/minimum) in °C between December and March: Morongoro (260 meters) 32/20 Zanzibar 30/25 The average temperature in the Indian Ocean is 25°C. From June to September, it is cooler. However, the temperature differences are limited and it is still between 18°C and 28°C on Zanzibar, and between 15°C and 27°C in Morongoro.
