The Danube crosses northern Austria from west to east, and the Austrians will tell you that it is in their country that the banks of the river are the most beautiful. UNESCO has even classified Wachau as a World Heritage Site, where the Danube river crosses hills where vineyards, castles and monasteries alternate. To avoid getting lost, nothing could be simpler, all you have to do is follow the 450 km of the “Donausteig”, or “Danube Trail”.
